The right time matters

Early Treatment

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation by age 7, or at the first sign of a problem.

Early Treatment

Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age, but there is often an optimal time to start. Beginning at the right time enables the best possible result with the least amount of time and expense. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial evaluation at the first sign of a problem or by age 7. Treatment may not be necessary at that visit, but an exam helps determine the most ideal time to begin.

Early evaluation allows timely detection of problems and a chance to monitor growth and tooth eruption. Interceptive treatment means stopping or preventing a problem before it becomes worse. It can create room for crowded, erupting teeth; reduce the risk to protruding front teeth; preserve space for unerupted teeth; help eliminate habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting; reduce the need for tooth removal; and reduce later treatment time with braces.

Your child’s first visit begins with a short registration form. An assistant escorts the patient to the examination room. Dr. Carley evaluates the number of teeth, alignment, bite, lips, cheeks, and tongue. Parents are then shown the orthodontic needs, treatment options, and how the office functions. If treatment is recommended, diagnostic records can be taken the same day or scheduled later.

A free exam does not create an obligation to begin treatment. Call (815) 842-4142 to schedule.
