Keep the result for life

Types of Retention

Retainers protect the bite after braces. We recommend lifetime retention with a wear schedule that tapers over time.

Types of Retention

Retention is not an afterthought. Teeth have a memory, and without retainers they can drift toward their original positions. We recommend lifetime retention, using a system that gradually reduces the time you need to wear retainers while still protecting the result.

Common options include removable retainers you take out to eat and brush, clear overlay retainers that fit closely over the teeth, and fixed (bonded) retainers placed behind the front teeth when extra stability is needed. The type, or combination, is chosen after treatment based on your bite and how the teeth moved.

Wear instructions matter as much as the appliance. If a retainer feels tight, breaks, or is lost, contact the office rather than waiting. A tight retainer can mean teeth are already shifting. We can often replace a retainer or discuss limited recovery treatment.
